My son was given a penny in change that from 1983. It has what appears to be an outline of Illinois that Lincoln is looking at, that is, it is in the upper right quarter of the coin. Underneath are the letters "IL." Anyone heard of this coin?
i have heard of this cent discussed on this forum b4. unfortunately, it has little value (i believe) and i think the damage was said to be done outside of the mint. Welcome to the forum =)
to CoinTalk countrybar. Unfortunately you have a novelty item worth exactly 1¢. Several years ago there was a private company selling sets of cents on which they had counterstamped the outlines of the various states. It was a fad, over as quickly as it started. Over the years there have been many such fads and, like pet rocks, they disappear into the mists of time.
I've found a few coins that have things stamped on them. I've got a 1976 penny that has a liberty bell stamped on it. Yes, it happened after it left the mint. Yes, its only worth one cent. Yes, it doesn't have any 'numismatic value'. But I think they're still pretty neat. I've found a couple of coins that were stamped liked that. I have them in my binder with squished pennys. How often do you get to ad something to your collection that costs you one cent?
i have gotton only one 1976 cent with the outline of texas on it. thought it was neat and saved it.:kewl:
Unfortuanatly, like Roy said, it is a novelty item. But still an awesome find. :thumb: I have a complete set of 2006 cents that have all of the states counterstamped. I think it is called "The heritage of the United States" set. But, still, neat find. Phoenix
