Earlier today I pulled out the proof set of my birth year that was given to me when I was younger, and I noticed without a loop that there was some clear doubling on the coin. I took it to two dealers whom also agreed that it was a double die, and not machine doubling. Anyway, it will grade at least a pr-65, and I was wondering if anyone had any idea of its worth. I'd post pictures, but all I have is a scanner, that won't give a large enough picture.
Are you sure it was a proof set and not a mint set I do not know of any proof double dies from 1983. Maybe you discovered an unknown variety. Mikediamond from Coneca knows all about errors so he will probably give you some more information. The non-proof double dies sell for around $400.00 in MS-65.
It's definitely a proof. At first I thought it was just a rpm, because there was strong doubling on the s, but upon further inspection I noticed doubling on the bust slightly, obvious doubling on liberty and the motto, as well as the date. One dealer offered me 50 dollars for it, but I told him he can forget it, as I'm pretty darn sure it's a lot more valuable than that.
I hope that PCGS will list the DD since this is the "first" one...you might have to get Coneca to list it before any grading Co. will list it...I'm not sure how that works. Speedy
PCGS will only attribute those DDO or DDR listed in the Red Book. So if you are hoping for an attribution listed on the slab - you will be wasting your money. Send the coin to ANACS to receive a lsited attribution.
Thanks for the advice. Thankfully I have not shipped it yet, and I'll see what I can do about getting them to grade it.
