Whats up with the 1983 Washington Quarters ? A friend has gone nuts looking for them, but he want tell me why ? Am I missing somthing here ?
I've noticed that some collectors often think that circulated 1982 and 1983 dated coins are somehow "valuable". Did your friend give a reason as to why he was looking for them? Is he looking for them in circulated coin rolls? I might understand if he's looking for nice BU's, but...
Circulated examples of this coin are pretty easy unless you're looking for nice well made XF's and better. Look for nice even strikes and light even wear. While you're looking you may as well also watch for the small motto reverse coins. These are common on this date but are still desirable in nice condition. These are also know as the type "d" reverse and are characterized by many differences on the reverse with the most obvious being the distance between the right side of the "N" in "UNUM" and the eagle's head; it is much farther on the type "d" reverse coin. The relief is much shallower and there are dozens of minor differences also. This variety appears on all 1977 to '84 issues (except '82-P) and is quite elusive on some.
Here is an example on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39463&item=3956870312&rd=1 I guess there is something to the 1983 series quarter. That one website had the 1983 P in only GOOD condition valued at $2.30 and the 1983 D at $1.15. How con this be ? WOW !!!!!!!!!!
As I said in the other thread, this is not accurate. There are no buyers for these coins under XF. There are very few sellers for the coins at this level either. Nice attractive VF's are easily found in circulation. There are almost no coins under VG and the mintage was high enough that there are still many millions in circulation.
