My boys and I are having a ball digging through pocket change and have started a nice little collection. We’ve learned about Zinc Rot but was wondering about this 1983 Penny. Do you think we are seeing Zinc Rot to the right of the date? The small circle?

What about the crazy top edge? Think someone tried to mess with this coin or is it possibly an off-center strike? Thanks for the help.

Ok - that’s definitely Zinc Rot. Answered my own question. How about the off center mess?

maybe a misaligned die on the heads side.

The double rim is a result of a Misaligned Die Strike. A common occurrence on many coins on all years.
The little blob next to the date is a Plating Bubble.. If it ruptures tge Zinc underneath the Copper Plating will be exposed then you can have Zinc Rot

Hey thank you! We haven’t found one like this before today but I am sure we will continue to se them as we dig through their fishbowls.
