Is the damage on this coin caused by die deterioration . and i noticed that the the I and B in pluribus doesnt look right because the i looks tike an L. plus their isnt a shirt collar on the bust
It appears to be a very weak strike and worn die. Those 2 factors lead me to believe any doubling is MD.
If you enlarge the pictures you will see that it isnt a weak strike . the lettering is cut into the metal
I enlarged the pictures and spent some good time looking at them. The hair does not show much detail, and striation and roughness of the planchet are present. These are some things evidencing weak strike and/or worn die.
your saying a weak strike will cause the raised areas on the planchet and the groves along the edges arround the lettering
That is what I think. the "RIB" in "PLURIBUS" are somewhat connected at the bottom. If the strike had been stronger, there would have been the separation of letter and more definition. Also, a stronger strike would not only have caused the metal to flow up better into the recesses, but also smoother into the fields.
You are very welcome. The above is just my opinion based on my numismatic studies thus far. Others may chime in with something different. It would not be the first time I was wrong. In any event, I would keep the coin for reference purposes as you continue to search and collect. Also, feel free to post questions or comments more often.
