It's looks like PMD to me. If it was a double strike, you would expect to see more detail. For one thing, E PLURIBUS UNUM would be impressed over AMERICA. Chris
I think this is a vice job. If it were a double strike off collar, it would have the same memorial as a regular strike, just rotated and this does not.
Chris, What would could this happen outside the mint? If it was a hammer job or vise job then the obverse would show considerable damage also wouldn't it ?
The rim looks flattened on the front. IMO they could have rested it against a piece of wood and that would have given the flattened rim. The hair is flattened out also.
Im thinking a coin somehow may have flipped and s You may very well be right but flattened hair is on opposite end of coin though?
Once you have acquired a better understanding of the minting process, common sense will tell you that it is impossible for a double strike to look like this. The dies are mounted in fixed positions (hammer & anvil) and the pressure imparted on the strike is equal across the entire face of the die. Of course, the only person who will really know how this damage happened is the person who did it, but in all likelihood, he/she probably used a hammer and a second coin to create the impression. Chris
Thanks Chris and your right I don't fully understand the process nor do I have common sense! But I was thinking two coins could have hit each other in the process but one would of had to flip over to create the impression it shows and I guess that's not possible, not knowing fully how the minting process works ! But I was pretty excited at first when I came across it! Will keep on searching !
If it was a mint error, wouldn't the pillars be raised instead of the space between the pillars (on the error strike)
Its alright to get excited!! But please make sure that one of the long time regulars gives you advice. Just look at how long they have been on forum and there posts before you take some advice to heart. I see last night a person that has been here a while that knows nothing about errors was giving bad info, I think last night was a full moon, LOL There are shysters and others all over the place. specially U tube And ebay trying to sell Post mint damaged coins to uneducated folks. You never know that's the fun part about finding stuff.
Thanks everyone for the info! Every day is a learning experience with coins for me! Im Not sure who to trust or who has been around awhile besides the ones that reply to my post often !
I think you know then. If you get Paddy, FurryFrog, Chris, Fred, You will be real cool. And lots of others also, Some that post in middle of night WELL!!
Hello to all, I have a 1983d unplated, rotated reverse and last but not least it has a rpm!! I'm not a highly educated coin collector but I do know that this Penny is definitely an odd one.. Could all of these errors really be possible on one Penny? Jim
