Does anyone have any insight on why I see so many 1983 D quarters whose minmark is indistinguishable. A mint mark is present, but I'll be damned if they look like 'D's. I can see one or two, but it seems that the majority I'm finding are just 'blobs'.
Did they have a clogged die problem or something back then?

I think it is caused by the post that would create the center of the D was chipped away,, i dont know if they just got lazy and didnt change them or if it was toward the end of the series and they just let it go .

Does it hurt the value of the coin... i.e. would it be graded lower because of this or because it came from the mint this way, it would be graded the same as if the D was distinguishable.

Of course it would be better if the Mint mark was clear, But I doubt it would make much difference on a circulated coin, as far as value.

I have several hundred 1983 quarters about half show the D as filled and the other half are clear,,

Do you also keep them because of the value of them even in grades as low as 'G'? What do you think the market is on these? Whom would be interested in buying them?
