I don't know what to make of the D but the first S in states looks like it might be something. i'm hoping for the best, but expect less. ty

The coin is so beat up that it is hard to tell what happened to it. It doesn't look like hub doubling to me.

would you agree that it doesn't look like machine doubling?

Between the coin's apparently rough shape and the fact you've cherry picked one area to show, I'm guessing it's not what you've hoped. Care to post photos of the entire reverse?

Well if it's not hub doubling, then it's either machine or die deterioration.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

There is no doubt in my mind that your quarter was struck with a deteriorated die, one that was pushed way beyond its normally usable life.

It doesn't really matter whether it is machine doubling or die deterioration doubling. It's in terrible shape.

I agree, but for learning purposes

What you are seeing in United is MD or Machine doubling this is very common.

Notice the flat shelf like "doubling" and how the devices are thinner where this occurs. This is a dead give away for MD.

While the die may be worn this looks more like MD than Die Deterioration Doubling.

P.S. Are we allowed to post links to coin reference sites here? Not sure what the rules are on this.

Thanks Chris. Nice link too. First time seeing that particular PDF.

I noticed it said that Die Deterioration doubling doesn't always come with the orange peel affect. I didn't see any on OPs coin, so i went with MD. I guess it could be either one, or is it possible to have both Die Deterioration Doubling and MD on same coin?

If I understand it right it could be.

Yes, you can have both MD and DDD on the same coin.

Correct! You don't need to find the orange peel effect to have DDD. If you look back on the first set of the OP's images, you can see that the deterioration of the die can show as irregular lines along some of the letters. If it had been machine doubling, the lines would still be crisp and straight.
