    No. Not a Mint Error of any kind.. Looks like damage.

    But it clearly doesn't since you can see the zinc core through the damaged area...

    What I dont understand is how damage like this can occur, where it squishes the lettering out but the surface of the letter is lower in depth than the metal pushed outwards.

    Heat damage. Started to melt the zinc. Maybe some sort of electric arc through the coin to generate the localized melting, but there is no way to tell for sure. However, I can say with certainty that it is not a mint error.
