1983 D nickel damage?

    Hmm?? The "crack" is under the Letters. I'll go out on a limb and vote for damage but at the mint somehow.

    Very interesting, how that anomaly goes underneath the letters. For that reason, I suspect it is not PMD, though I don't know what is going on there.

    I have seen that before. I believe it is a Die Deterioration issue.

    I think it could be die damage from a possible contact with the collar die.

    It was on the planchet, the die just struck over it.

    I don't know, if it was on the planchet wouldn't it have moved that metal down to the level of the fields when struck? I would think something had to be going on with the die. Then again I'm far from an expert on this.

    Interesting piece either way

    I see, you mean smashed it down. Why is it so up like that, in between the letters, which are flat field on the die? Quit thinking, will you! :banghead: That is to say, very good point.

    My vote would be a huge scratch on the die. Those "low points" on the coin are actually the highest part of the die. It's an interesting variety at the least.

    Looks like the obverse die was damaged from a misaligned strike
