Hello! I am pretty new to collecting and studying coins, but I have an inquiry about the value of a certain penny I found in a box of coins.

It is an American Penny made in 1982, which seems to have an error where the pictures on each end is oppositely flipped from the other side. I believe it is a zinc penny, as it makes a "thud" sound upon dropping rather than a higher pitched sound compared to copper. Upon further inspection, there was no "d" under the year. The only thing I am not sure about is whether the year print is large or small, as I simply cannot make it out with my eye. The condition is rather worn.

If anybody could give me some insight on this coin, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Please excuse poor image quality, my phone is not a very good camera.

Welcome to CT, Coin99. I'm guessing that you are not in the US.

No mint mark (the D under the date) means it was minted at Philadelphia. Other than 2017, no US penny minted in Philadelphia has carried a mint mark. Coins minted at Denver carry a D mint mark, and coins minted at San Francisco carry an S.

The orientation of obverse and reverse is how all US coins are minted. Coins minted in other countries, such as UK, use a different orientation of obverse and reverse.

There is nothing special, collectible, or valuable about your coin. In fact, it looks as though it suffers from a little bit of zinc rot.

Zinc cents weigh around 2.5 grams and copper cents weigh around 3.1 grams.

    :)
