Im still new to coin collecting, just about 2 months into it and today while coin roll hunting a box of Quarters I came across this. To me it looks to be a quarter struck on a Nickel Planchet but at the same time it looks quite fake to me. I dont have a digital scale so I dont know the weight, and im not even gonna pretend to know whether its heavier/lighter then a normal quarter. I was wondering what everyones thoughts are. If it is real what shoild I do with it? Is there any way to get it authenticated? Sorry about the lack of quality photos my fiance has my dslr so im stuck using my underwater camera. Thanks for any help!

That is one odd looking quarter. Looks fake to me. The eagle on the reverse is completely wrong. And most of the lettering also looks wrong. If it was truly a quarter struck on a nickel planchet it would have been struck with genuine dies. And the smooth edge is also odd. The collar for quarters has reeding. Even a quarter struck on a nickel planchet would have some reeding and not a fully-struck-up smooth edge.

Yeah, I think you got yourself a fake. Cool find.

Judging from the rough surface texture, I'd say it was a cast copy. I could be wrong.

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

If the date was earlier I would say it was a pattern, but it's not, so it's a fake.
