Hi I am new to coin collecting and I have a coin from an auction that I wanted to offload. It is a 1982 penny in okay condtion, but the interesting thing is that it is struck on a larger flan. Hopefull the photos do it justice. I this a rare error? Is this a coin I should have slabbed to sell? Any idea how much is this coin worth? Thanks for your input!!
It's not struck on a larger Planchet. It is struck out of collar. This Mint Error is reffered to as a Broadstruck error. Since there was no 3rd Die, The Collar in place, the Blank Cent Planchet expanded outwards when it was struck
Not really rare. You can slab it but it would cost you more to do so than it is worth. $10.00 - $15.00 raw Not big dollars $
Ahhhh welll. I thought I was onto a real bargain when I bought it. You live and learn! Thanks paddyman!
I would say yes.. But not a huge difference. I find Copper Cent Broadstrikes more desirable that Copper Plated Cents. I would pay a bit more for the all Copper. Unless it's a Wheat Cent Broadstruck.. I paid about $30.00 for an example once Here is the Cent I sent to NGC
Thanks for info. I would be willing to pay a little more for a copper cent. I try to steer away from Zinc Cents of any kind when buying. but I do have a few that came my way. For what its worth. some ballpark values. https://varietyerrors.com/coin-price-guide/
Ah, makes me think of my old man. In his vernacular, "broadstruck" meant the machine operator was female. The Vegas "Rat Pack" were PC compared to my dad.
and I thought you were going to post how the cent couldn't have been struck on flan as it's just too soft.
Thank you Mr Yoda. I bargain I think I have. I paid $12.50 (AUS) for it. That's about $US9.35 - a massive saving of at least 65 cents .
