I want to make sure all the penny slots I have filled are correct for 1982. I am not sure of the small date and large date coins I have. Can anyone direct me to a good picture of the difference. I will welcome any help. Thanks in advance.

My old Red Book has some pretty clear pictures. The "2" on the large date is quite close to the rim, and from the picture it looks like the difference would be very clear if you had one of each side by side.

My scanner has quit talking to my computer, or I would scan the picture and post it for you.

I agree that when they are side by side they are easier to identify. For me, the 8 in the small date has the circle of the bottom half of the eight the same size as the top half of the eight. But the with the large date, the bottom half of the 8 is larger than the top half of the eight.

    Good luck.

Side-by-side the 82's are EASY to differentiate. If you have a small date and a large date next to each other there will be NO DOUBT in your mind what you are looking at and which is which.

So here's the question, is that 8 or 9 lincoln's in total for 1982?

Again, according to the Red Book:
    • 1982 Large and Small Dates w/o mint mark, copper
    • 1982D Large Date, copper
    • 1982S Proof, copper
    • 1982 Large and Small Dates w/o mint mark, zinc
    • 1982D Large and Small Dates, zinc
for a total of 7 circulation varieties and 1 proof.

Roy is correct, there are no known 1982D Small Date copper Lincoln cents.

So the answer is 8 (if you include the 1982S Proof).
