Hello, I purcahsed this dime today at a flea market. The obverse shows the coin as being off center but the reverse appears to be centered with pretty much a normal rim. I was wondering if this was odd that it is not more off center on the reverse. Thanks
From what i can see the rim is normal, if it is it rules out broadstrike. The normal reverse pretty much rules it out also. What you have is a MAD or misaligned die. The reverse die is normal because it is lined up with the rim, the obverse die lossened up and became out of alignment.
A misaligned die that;s what it is off about 10 to 15 percent a nice one indeed. Like Tres said they stoped minted pure silver in bussiness strike coins in 1965 a copper alloy was introduced into the coins Jazzcoins Joe
Actually, they minted 90% silver coinage into 1966. Silver coinage dated 1964 made of 90% silver was actually produced from January 1964 through April of 1966! According to Domestic and Foreign Coins Manufactured by Mints of the United States 1793-1980, published by the Department of the Treasury/Bureau of the Mint: "Public Law 88-580, Sept. 3, 1964 authorized the Mint to inscribe the figure 1964 on all coins minted until adequate supplies were available. Public Law 89-81 repealed that legislation. Coins bearing the year 1964 were produced from Jan. 1964-Apr. 1966." So to say that they stopped minting silver coins in 1964 is not exactly true. Also, coins dated 1964 and earlier were not pure silver, they were a 90% silver alloy. Thanks, Bill
Is there about a 10-15 degree rotation of the reverse. And is the edge reeding missing from the area nearest Roosevelt's head?
Hello, No there is no rotation on the reverse and there is reeding the whole way around the coin. Sorry for the delay in responding as I have been away for awhile.
