hey guys and gals, i ran across this 1982-p half dollar this morning. it appears to have been either painted, dipped, or tarnished to a gold-like color, and has the dates "1960" and "1980" punched into the face. otherwise, it appears pretty much normal. here's a pic: any ideas? it's obviously pmd, but i don't know when/why something like this would be done to the coin. thanks!
Counter stamped. Possibly to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Kennedy's election. It's considered damage and adds no extra value.
Many JFK halves are stamped with dates and slogans after leaving the mint. Several companies sold these with a microscopic gold plate ( valueless ) which wore off very quickly if handled. I do not know which reason the producer used for the date, but purpose was some sales pitch. Jim
i figured it was probably some type of commemorative deal, but i've not seen one before so i didn't know the significance. my plan was to put it back into the mix anyways, and that's exactly where it will go now that i know for sure. i appreciate the replies and the info!
