Can anyone give some information on the 1982 penny I recently found? Can't seem to find much information on the internet about it. Is it a real double die?
Hi @Amber Hughes! Welcome to CT. I am not an expert on the DD's yet but I'm sure if you have a little patience, others will reply in time. What I did find for you, in the meantime, is a link to Variety Vista that shows you the two DDR's of that year and it doesn't appear to me that it matches either of those very well. (Like I said, I'm not good with identifying DD's.) http://www.varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/1982PDDR002.htm
Thank you for your help. I am very new to penny searching and admit I know very little about it. I found this in a roll of pennies from my bank.
It's pretty exciting when you find something like this being new! I personally think it's flat and shelf like which would be die deterioration but wait for others. Here are two other links that were passed on to me that you can learn from :Machine Doubling ,Machine Doubling
Ohh and it also looks like you have a minor MAD (misaligned die strike). I would have to see both sides with full pictures to be sure. The degree of what you have is not worth any other value but they're neat to find, regardless.
Ken454, I'm apologize for sounding ignorant about this question but like I said I am new to coin collecting. What does MD mean?
Thanks for the pictures. Normally (and I say most of the time, not all of the time) you want to take the photo from the top down, not the side. What you do have that I know is a MAD, misaligned die strike. It is a minor one but still neat to find, like I said. A MAD only shows on one side, the other will be normal. Here is a good reference for that.http://www.lincolncentforum.com/misaligned-die-errors-vs-off-center-strikes/
Thank you everyone for your help and being patient with me. I'm going to keep it because it's my 1st weird penny!
It's good to keep things like this from time to time. You can look at them and refresh when you have questions about doubling or MAD. Useful for a newbie!
