I'm getting better at spotting my doubled die varieties, but this one threw me off.. I am still a Newbie and am usually wrong but it looks like a large date over a small date.. Obverse and Reverse has errors.. I took the best pictures I could.. I apologize for so many pictures but the coin color looks so different in different lights.. And there are a lot of bubbles in different areas.. Especially on and by the date..Also a small 3 on the reverse top of building.. TY
That's just a definite Large Date. No such thing as a Large date over Small date. 1982 had 2 types of Planchets.. Copper and Copper plated zinc. I really don't see anything else but circulation wear and maybe a bit of a worn die strike. There are thousands of Cents just like yours. The small 3 you are seeing is just Paredolia caused by a circulation hit.
The large date is easy to tell from the small date. The 1960-D has a valuable small date over large date. But that's a different coin.
Okay y'all.. if you can't see the doubling in the date then I give up.. I know what I'm looking at and I wouldn't post it if I didn't see it.. sometimes I wondered if yall really even look at my stuff.. that's the whole point in posting so many pictures in different lighting.. apparently I need a professional phone to post something yall can see.. Thanks for the replies..
I think I do see what looks like a second "2" behind the "2" in 1982. But, often times, PMD can appear to look like something else. They can play tricks on our eyes. Firstly, I agree with you - you will need to post sharper and clearer photos. In the meantime, there is one thing I noticed. Looking at your first photo and focusing on the "2" in the date, I see that they are not the same height. I believe they would need to be for doubling. That's what I see anyhow - for what it's worth. Here's what I mean: The "2" that is behind is coincidental damage, in light of the height disparities. But there is always the option of sending this to a TPG for verification and attribution if you desire.
There is no listing of a DDO of this nature in Wexler or VarietyVista... A 001 has a light spread in the date with other various gouges and scratches. However, this variety is only found in Zn cent with small date. The 002 variety indicates a light extra thickness to the date with a strong extra thickness to liberty. There are also various gouges and scratches on the obverse and reverse. This applies to the large date Zn cent. The 003 has a doubling of the ear. I feel as though the lighting is too bright and creating spots directly over where you want others to view. The pictures also pixelate when zoomed in. Just my thoughts... ~Rob
Thanks.. It is a destent set of 2 dates.. I have read all the stuff y'all told me to and can distinguish the difference in doubling a lot better.. I have actually ran across a few doubled dies that very clear in showing 2 of the letters but I wanted y'alls opinion before I sent anything off to be certified.. TY
You are funny.. you always take the time to answer me though and I appreciate that.. but you have to break stuff down a little more than usual for me to understand sometimes or I get frustrated.. lol.. but you have hung in there with me.. thanks
Thanks for the lighting advice.. And believe it or not I go to Verity Vista and Wexler and look.. I get excited and don't post the exact number like you just did.. but I do look for the places on the rim and try to match them up like your supposed to.. I thought I was doing really good with these pictures because I had just read to hold the coin up in your hand beside a 100 watt light bulb.. haha.. I just knew y'all were going to see the doubling in the date.. I will get it right.. Thanks
I'm older in age but have just begun a new hobby in coin collecting/looking for errors. I have looked through well over a thousand "pennies", with lots more to go through. I have looked through hundreds of quarters, with more to go through that I have rolled up years ago and before becoming interested in looking for errors and such, so have to go through those too. I guess what I'm saying is I have looked through thousands of coins recently and only found one DDO 1c and possibly a DDR 25c. I do get frustrated when I think I see something and others say no... or don't respond at all. There is a coin I still want to make argument about and will when I'm off my work stretch and can do more investigation to support my cause, or discover something new to thwart it. I generically use "doubling" as a term, knowing that it is not the same as doubled under the circumstances I hunt for. You may see "doubling" and I do too with some of the pictures, but this does not appear to be doubled... IMO and using my novice eyes. ~Rob
