    Looks like machine doubling.

    Meow thinks its MD too. Because in the pic of the E, the bottom leg out of the three would have had a split point. It does not, and shows a doubling that just stretches away from the device. Maybe some one else here can explain that better than Meow.

    In 1982, the Denver Mint produced more than 542 million of these - really wore out some dies.
