Okay guys I need some help here before I get too excited. I bought a $25 box of Penny's today from my local bank and my first role I went through I found this 1982 d penny so I put it on my scale and weighs 3.1 G and my heart skipped a beat. Being fairly new at this I had to do some research and from that I think this is the small date ! Please tell me I'm rite !!!????

    Large date. Sorry.

Also, what is with everyone thinking they have found these small date 82-Ds lately?

They made 17 billion 1982 cents.
There has been 1 1982-D SMALL DATE copper.
There plenty of 1982-D small date zincs, and
plenty of 1982 small date copper small date zinc Philadelphia.
The Phillies carry a premium in high grades.
There may be another 1982-D small date copper out there, but the odds are billions-1. Higher than winning the powerball.

Sorry guys in the research I did it says that the top of the numbers will all be in line and the bottoms in line except for the 9 so maybe I read wrong! That's why I turned too CT for help! Like I said I'm fairly new to this and try to research before I post and look like a idiot ! Sorry to bother !

You are no bother. It's great to ask questions. Once you get to understand better what to look for then it will be easier for you when CRH coins. It takes time, practice and patience.

Good to ask questions. Even better that you did your research beforehand! :)
I honestly am curious what is with the rash of people asking about 82D Small Dates lately though. It seems like such a random thing to get people looking through coins :)

The shape of the 2 is a key to determining which is an LD and which is an SD.
The large date has a sloppy 2 and the small date has a delicate fully formed 2 like a swan's neck. See post #5. (I was about to post the same photo, and I lost the shootout at the saloon.)

I see it alot on these boobtube videos and Facebook coin collecting pages.

Furry frog I can't speak for everybody but it was the only 82 I had come across in awhile and remember reading something in one of my grandfather's old coin books about the 1982 penny (cent) . Here's a pic of the first one he had me read years ago ! Very interesting BTW

The small date isn't all in the 2. the whole date is petite. you will know the difference when you find them. They are a whole lot easier to discern than a 70 S or a 60.

This site is for people like us who are new at coin collecting, I post things on here many times and asked stupid questions but that's how we learn. It took me awhile to figure out the small 1982 date from the large. Now I have so many of the small dates but not the right weight. Good luck!

Sorry but I'm a little obsessed over this and keep doing my research and got a good pic here ! But looks like the 8 is higher than 1,9 and 2 ! All the sites on this have different things to look for and contradict each other ! IMG_20180107_151825506_HDR.jpg

Still a large date....Look at the 2. Small and Large date 2's are completely different.
But perhaps @paddyman98 has something to add...

The 1960 SD is physically smaller than the LD, but with the others I'm not sure about the size difference.

IMG_20180107_162200444_HDR.jpg this has the swan type 2 but the 1 is not the same on bottom as the 8 and 2 ?
