Hey guys. I have a question. I can't get pics right now but when/if i can, I'll post. I will try to describe in detail though what I notice here. I found a 1982 copper Lincoln cent that looke3d a little different than a copper cent should. I guess the best way I can describe it is that the font is totally different. The font noticeable mostly on the date of the coin is a more modern one -- seen on zinc cents, it's "crispier" and more clean looking. It almost looks like the die used to strike zinc cents was tested on this copper planchet, because it weighs 3.11 grams and has a nice ring when dropped, it is inded copper. What it is not.. is it is not a zinc cent, but looks like it should be. Also, I'm not sure what the proper term is for what I'm about to describe but you know how zinc cents look like they're not struck as hard as copper ones? Like the details don't "raise" out of the coin as much as a copper one? That is also true of this 1982... compared to another (normal, common looking) copper one of the same year. Lemme know what you guys think. Sorry about no pics, I literally have no double aa batteries that will work with my camera, it drains them instantly. Ether they are awful quality batteries or something is now wrong with my camera.
In 1982 they made both the copper cents and copper clad on zinc cents., and there were 2 designs, The older large date font, and the smaller date, more modern font with a reduced relief. Both compositions, both sizes were released at both Philadelphia and Denver for a total of 8 circulating cents varieties. You probable have a 95% copper small date cent. Photo would confirm along ith the weight of 3.11 g. Welcome to the forum. Jim
Mea culpa! Forgot there was no 82-D, 95%, type II. Breen says "mint bureau denies any of type II were made in brass ( at Denver). Thanks for the correction. Jim
