I just found this penny going thru my change recently. Even though I have been checking my change for errors and rare dates for over 40 years I am just learning the lingo and causes of error coins by reading this forum.
Is this a struck through die cap and is my discription correct?

Thanks very much for showing us your coin. this coin looks to have a great big piece of a worn out die cap fused to it. me and a certain coin pro have been dickering about this for a very long time. he calls all coins PMD if they have a thin aporn looking piece on them.I have always said it is possible for a super thin fragment from a worn away die cap to adhere to a planchet when struck by the dies. I have even experimented with coins that had the thin aporn looking places and some of them can easily be removed and this leaves a shallow area in the coins when it is removed. your coin looks like a late stage die cap coin.

it's definately looks to be struck thru die cap . the reverse side is not damaged. If this was post mint damage the reverse side would have really been banged up.I sure do like that retained fragment of the other coin that used to be the die cap if that is what it really is. It sure looks like it is to me. this may help some folks learn what no one has been able to tell them.

Do you know if your coin is copper or one of the copper plated zinc coins ? It appears like it is probably copper from your photos . a copper cent weighs around 3 grams and a plated zinc coin is around 2.5 grams. on your coin It would probably be kind of important to know. I may have made a wrong call on one of my earlier posts , if your coin is a zinc coin then the place that goes from the date and across Lincoln would probably be a place that is missing the copper plating.

It's a generic capped die strike. In other words, it was struck through a late-stage die cap. The greyish area looks to be a stain.

it is copper. the stain appears to be metalic and does not come off with a gentle rub.

That is exactly what I thought . be sure and don't rub on this area because it does look like a struck in fragment to me. this would make your coin much much better if it is and a very educational coin. the reason I'm almost sure it is a struck thru fragment is because I can see what looks like lines around the edges of this area.
