Ok, I have another question about another penny missing the designers initials on the reverse. What causes this? The detail immediately surrounding the area in question is still very raised and in decent shape. Seems to me like if the initials had been worn down, then so would some of the other detail.
The most common cause is what's called a Struck Through Grease. When a Die is created the Images, letters, numerals and initials are incused into the die. During the mint striking process sometimes cleaning of the die and/or oil and debris can get into the incused areas not allowing for the image to be properly struck.. Thus missing initials. There are other reasons less common but this looks like the case on your Cent
This cent is in the "strike it rich" . The comment about the Missing "FG", is only if it is completely gone, as yours is. I wouldnt say it holds much of a premium, if any. Still cool to put away. I usually do.
