I can't find a price on these things anywhere. They're not even listed in the redbook?? What's going on here? Any 2 cents worth?
here is a couple links on this topic http://forums.collectors.com/messag...669077&highlight_key=y&keyword1=1983 mint set http://forums.collectors.com/messag...591314&highlight_key=y&keyword1=1983 mint set
I appreciate your effort in trying to help me figure out what these things are worth. Although, if you notice these are not souvenir sets like the links you have posted. Also, they say they don't exist yet here they are right in my hands?
There were none produced for those two years, believe me. The sets you have were made up by others so collectors would have something to put in their collection. Look at prices of BU 82 and 83 quarters. See how high they are? This is because there were no mint sets to cut up to get access to BU examples.
You are right, I changed it. The US mint did not produce mint sets in 1982 and 1983. One of the stupidest things I ever didn't do is put away BU coins for those years. I knew they would be short because of this, but just never got around to getting the BU coins from the bank. I was bright enough to buy a few rolls of quarters a few years later though, when they were still $20 a roll.
That's awesome for you! So I imagine these are third party productions. What do you think I should do bust them up and sell them individually or sell them as the set?
I have heard of these, but never seen how much they go for. I really am not in a position to let you know if these sell for more than the coins separately or not. Hopefully someone who knows these will be able to answer for you. Sorry I am not more help. Chris
The 82s that have sold on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_nkw...odkw=&_osacat=526&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 The 83s http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_nkw...d+set&_osacat=526&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
I believe they are actually the SMS sets issued issued by the mint, since that and the proof were the only sets issued. Perhaps you have them in a repackaged envelope, but they are sms sets. IMHO Sorry, I meant to say "COINS" . Your sets appear to have been repackaged. The original set was issued with colored bands on the edge of the envelope for the mints and a copper colored insignia. gary There are some BIN on eBay right now. I believe the 82 was 75-80.
The ones I saw on eBay were the actual mint packaging. I almost hate to say it, but I think you might have to bust them up. But try to sell them intact first. If there's no interest, then you probably have to sell them individually. But they are always worth something, right ? Who knows, maybe somebody is collecting these by this company and you have the only sets available ?
ok, I don't want this to go any further than it has with misinformation The sets that you have pictured are not manufactured by the US Mint. they are after-market creations. You may be able to sell them at a premium because they look to be uncirculated sets, but most knowledgable collectors will pass on them. There are US Mint issued sets for 1982 and 1983. The souvenir sets sold at the US Mint gift shops are the only existing Mint sets from those years. They come one cellophane package to an envelope and contain only the coins of that specific Mint. The US Mint made and sold these coins for years and most never knew that they existed, but they are the only sets that are of US Mint origin for these years. http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_nkw...d+set&_osacat=526&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 These are some examples of official 1982 Mint issued sets. You can readily see the difference.
I am very familiar with souvenir sets and know the difference between the two. I also know these are sets put together by someone other than the us mint. This is obvious by the envelopes. The question I've been seeking and the title for this sect of the forum is what its worth. I am very curious to what these sets go for even though they are not "official" mint sets they are still a complete set of BU coins for those years which many collectors would like to add to there collections for the lack of the ones never made. Only knowledgeable collectors would know this.
