    Hello everyone,

I found what i think is a micro P on a 1981 nickel. i have not heard of them and am not sure. Can you take a look and let me know. The 1996 is just for comparison. i do not have a 1981p near by.

    Regards,
    Stan

Thank you. I did notice that the 1981's I have checked through do have smaller mint marks. What causes this to happen? The filled mint marks?

    Hi,

Earlier nickels had the mint marks added to the dies with a punch. The P was smaller and that is normal.

Once we get to the 1990/1991 period, mint marks were created as a part of the design and were no longer punched into the dies by hand. They were also larger and more distinct.

Therefore a mint mark after 1990/1991 is normally bigger and ones on earlier dated nickels are smaller. Both sizes are normal for the dates of coin that they are on.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I do not know alot about errors, have actually avoided them for the most part. But yesterday while roll searching i found a really nice Jefferson with an easily viewable Die crack. First Time ever. Now I can not stop looking for them. This can not be good:( :headbang: Mostly as my eye sight is not as good as some, and I only have, for now, a 10x hand magnifier.

I am sure I will be asking a lot on errors as time goes by. Hope you guys won;t get tired to quickly:smile

    Regards,
    Stan
