Any ideas if the coins in this 1981 s Proof set are Type One or Two? My first group of photos were horrible so here are some new ones: Dollar: Half Dollar: Quarter: Cent: Nickel: Dime:
Your pictures are pretty blurry, which makes it difficult to tell the difference. With the photos provided, I would say that the only one that looks like a Type 2 is the Quarter (the most common T2.) I reserve the right to change my opinion with in-focus pictures.
Sure! I will take new photos of the most blurry coins very soon. I'm bad focusing my cell phone camera on tiny mint marks though. But on larger coins and such I am slightly better.
Okay, now I'm thinking it's just the half dollar...and now that I check the first batch of photos, I see that I was reading your titles incorrectly. So, just the half dollar.
Hmm. For some reason I'm being very non-committal about this. I'm still leaning toward T2 for the half, but it's about 60/40. It looks like it has the flat top of the MM that the T2 have, but the ends of the S should also be round and flat, and I'm not sure if I'm seeing it or if I want to see it. Perhaps someone else wants to chime in.
A quick way to think about the MMs is that the T1 for 81 have an balanced negative space in between the S curves, whereas the T2 top is left and the bottom is right. Another p/u technique is the T2 in 81 has a flat bar look to the middle stroke of the S, if I remember correctly this is all off the cuff. The t1 is more diagonal. Finally also mentioned before if you can get really close you can see the flattened shelf appearance. Oh and finally, the t2s in 81 are a bit blob like at the serif ends, with t1 crisper. Remembered another I think, the t2 MM is "reaching" on the top stroke outward from itself. Hope this helps, I always get confused. Having a scope helps a lot.
I am learning these but the half looks to be type 1 with that picture below...here is mine for comparison..
It is hard to see from those photos, but all look like type 1 to me except the half. That looks to me like it might be type 2.
That's what I was thinking...hard to tell at this point. All the others seem pretty clearly Type 1's...it's the half that's a maybe for me.
