I purchased this the other day knowing nothing more than it was my birth year. Then I checked online to see if I paid a fair price(12$)and I found that there was a type 1 and type 2 ,2 being much more valuable. Any way from what I found I think it's type 2 but have nothing to compare it to on hand. And let's face it you guys are smart. Let me know your thoughts. If you would like pics of whole set LMK. They are all Type I with the possible exception of the nickel, it’s too hard to tell from the picture.

The easiest way to tell Type I from II in 1981 is the fact that on the Type II mint mark, the loops in the S are different sizes. Obviously so.

If your coin’s loops are symmetrical, then the coin is a Type I

But a clear S is not what determines Type I or II.

Read that article. Especially the last two paragraphs that speak specifically about the 1981 coins. All 81s have a Clear S, so that’s not as helpful as you’d think

If I were to guess I would say yours is Type 1.
