Hi guys, I’m new here. Came across this old misprinted bill and got to wondering. Is it worth anything more than $100? It’s not in great condition but it’s pretty old. Thanks for taking a look.
The back is a bit off centered. I don't see a premium here. In my opinion, the error is small enough to actually be a detraction from the note. Collectors either want pristine notes or major errors. This is a small error that doesn't appeal to either group. Plus, $100 notes have so much money soaked into their face value...you need something really special to set it apart. This note is heavily circulated and has been damaged by one of those tester pens. Plus, it has the detraction of a minor error. It's a spender.
A misaligned or mis-cut note would have to be off enough to affect the inner details to carry any premium.
Always be vigilant about counterfeits on any $100 note. Talk about "worth the trouble"! I do see the "marker mark test", but that's not everything. That design isn't two generations out of date because it wasn't a counterfeiting problem child.
Feels real and if you zoom in you can see the fibers. It did pass the marker test. But even after all that could this bill be a fake?
No, not at all! Just do all the due diligence. Look for security thread, (transmitted light), check the microprinting around the portrait. On THAT series the microprinting around the portrait is a key thing.
This bill I believe is before they had that security thread but what am I looking for with the microprinting exactly again?
Around the portrait. Without magnification, it just looks like a thin line. Again, going from memory here.
That's called the best test of all! It's a lead pipe cinch it gets retired. Keep in mind, IF you ever get a fake, YOU are stuck and out the $100. There is no such thing as being reimbursed for it. I once got a fake $20 from an ATM, and the bank REFUSED to make it good.
I worked for a bank a number of years ago and one day someone came in with a counterfeit $20 claiming they got it from our ATM. Our bank manager told him the same thing. We had no proof it came from us and we can't reimburse for counterfeit bills.
