I have a coin that was given to me in 1981. It is a Canadian $50 gold coin. I will try to describe it as best I can and will provide pictures as well. I am trying to find out what it is worth. On the front it says "Elizabeth II" along the top and has a profile picture of Elizabeth II in the middle. Along the bottom it says "50 dollar 1981". On the back it says "Canada" along the top and has a maple leaf in the middle with "999" on each side of the maple leaf. Along the bottom it says "fine gold 1 oz or pur". I remember someone saying when I was young that it was a 4 star but not sure what that means. Can anyone help? I may be interested in selling it soon and wanted to get an idea of what it might be worth.
The latest price guides are going to be way off as far as pricing, since gold is now up over $800/oz. Figure you should get a little over melt and you're good to go. Best to check current prices at Canadian coin dealers and ebay to get an idea.
