Hey guys I come across this 1980d and on the VDB I can't find it anywhere doesn't appear to ever be there I've done it under a 60 magnification and 200 magnification and it's not there I compared it with some other 1980 DS and they were all legible some of them were faint but you can make it out so any thoughts on these zcamera-20170605_105819.jpg zcamera-20170605_105754.jpg zcamera-20170605_105720.jpg

The VDB on the Die was filled with debris. When it struck the Blank Planchet the 3 letters were not formed.
    Nothing really major.

The VDB is incuse, so it would be raised on the die. The coin looks like it may have been polished like when repairing a clashed die (area around the back of Lincoln's neck), but it's hard to tell for certain. I can't see if there are polishing lines around the VDB area.

I'm guessing it's something simple like over polishing but a small part says it might be something more. You said you can check at higher mag, so look closely to see if there are polishing marks around the shoulder and VDB area.

Yes I did look at it under a 200 magnification and you can't see it but on the subject of polishing this is the first time that I've spoke about it so under high magnification exactly what would I be looking for on polishing marks

Fine scratches, mostly parallel. They would be in the die so would show up as raised lines.

60x+ mag may be too high. Once again, there's a good probability that it's a simple explanation. Paddyman98 is pretty good when it comes to errors

Under 15 magnification I wasn't able to see any scratches but when I put it under 25 from the left side of the coin from Liberty to the back of his head you can see scratches from left to right consistently all the way through there the scratches are spaced about the width of a hair

That's what you want to look for in the area around the vdb

I see what you're talking about no I just double-checked and none of those scratches appear around the VDB or on his coat left or right of him
