Hello I have a 1980 D penny and was wondering if this was just more worthless machine doubling..LIBERTY , GOD WE TRUST THE 8 and the D especially
DDD-die deterioration doubling and plenty of damage.I don't think there is a ddo or reverse for 1980 D,variety Vista shows none still a cent.
Flat and shelf like.. Not a Doubled Die. You going to drive yourself nuts trying to find a true Doubled Die. That's why I stopped searching for them around the early 2000's
Prior to 1990 the mintmarks were handpunched into the die. When you see the MM displaying the same type of doubled image as the date and other lettering, it is a machine doubled or deteriorated die issue and a great learning tool for you to use when you look at other coins. Keep searching
My advice: Stop searching for doubled dies. Instead, read more about them and the differences between those and machine doubling and die deterioration doubling. Once you read about them, you can figure it out in milliseconds. I know a great book where you can learn and spot these differences.
