1980 D Lincoln Cent with appears to be Deep cameo frost strike.

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Bernard Macarius, Aug 13, 2019.

  1. I discovered a 1980 D Lincoln cent with both sides presenting the finish associated with the satin finish one would associate with a deep cameo strike. The edges appear to be 80% normal and a very small portion has the appearance of a normal finish as though it may be a small fraction of what was intended to be the shiny part of a deep cameo strike. I am excited, confused at the same time. It does in no way appear to be environmental, chemical or in any other way created. Has anyone ever seen something of this nature. The way in which it reflects the light at different angles is breathtaking. I have researched for 1 entire week and can find nothing like it or reference to it. Any suggestions. I have taken photos with my scope and review every day in an attempt to ascertain what could have taken place. Unless a planchet was in a die that was being struck for a very large deep cameo coin I do not see how this could have occurred. I ask for assistance please.

You will really need to post photos to get a reliable answer otherwise it would just be guesswork on anyone's part. You may have run into a nice early struck example but again, pics are needed.

Have you noticed that more and more pristine specimens of older dates have been showing up in our forums? What was that promotion (event?) that took place a while back?

  8. Sorry, Like I stated. New to this. I guess nobody else noticed as it looks just a bit different when holding till you really start looking at it.

    Damaged. Going by that photo.

There's no deep frost cameo on 1980-D Lincoln cent business strikes. Unless you think you have the 1st coin struck that year.

  10. Just took outside again as it is a partly sunny day. The appearance changes quite a bit as the light changes. Even Lincoln looks shaven then has dark beard, then shaven and dark beard again. Even for a new guy like me that is pretty darn cool. I took a video. It is baffling. Dont care if worth just a penny. Definitely something I intend on showing my family.

  11. No I think it is an error coin. One that was in a cameo strike by mistake. Is that possible?

  12. Guess I will send off and have the experts figure it out. Worth the investment to understand what it is. What is that like $15.00

I guess I should have waited until the photos were posted. It is hardly in pristine condition.

This is what a satin finish should look like.

Please note that it has nothing to do with cameo surfaces which usually look "frosty".

Your coin looks like a combination of die deterioration and post-mint damage. Sorry!

I can understand your enthusiasm Bernard, but it will cost in excess of $30.00 to have this slabbed and graded. I'd be willing to bet they take your money and deliver your coin back in what we call a body bag. It is IMHO a regular business strike with damage. All any of us can do is try and give good advice. What you end up doing is entirely up to you.

I believe you have been mesmerized by an old cent coated in lacquer or shellac.

If you like the coin, it doesn't cost anything to put it in a 2x2 coin flip and save it.
People are just trying to save you from spending $30+ on a .01 cent coin.
There are valuable coins out there, but it's a lot of searching, and a lot of trial
and error. This coin isn't it.
