I've been scratching my head on this one for a while. Did the pre 82 cents have a clad? I realize this may be coins 101, I just can't seem to comprehend!

The pre 82 cents were not supposed to be clad. It looks like the coin you have here may have a severe lamination problem .

Nor were post 1982 cents. Cents are never clad.

    Looks like chemical damage.

I agree with Paddy; damaged coin. Look at enough cents and you'll see that from time-to-time. Coins are kept/held under challenging conditions at times (e.g., underground, in a car cupholder for extended time). They attribute many of the conditions we see here at CT. Good luck on the hunt!

Cents have never been clad. 1982 was a transitional year. Copper before that date and zinc afterwards. Yours is damaged.

So...is a pre 1982 cent a cooper core cladded in copper and a 1982 and post a zinc core cladded with copper? it appears that both have lamination cracking, etc. Thanks

No, pre 83 cents were actually bronze 95% copper and 5% zinc.
The coin that started this thread is environmentally damaged. Caused by corrosion from a chemical.
