There is a raised, textured surface that goes in a circle around the reverse of this 1980-D dime. There are several places where there appears to be doubling and there are details missing in others. Will post more pics later this evening or first thing tomorrow. Thoughts?
Exactly. It was simply "made" from a die that should have been retired long before your coin was minted. This was very common on coins from that period. Sorry.
Heavily polished, loosely-fitting old die. The doubling is caused by the loose fit, the missing details and chatter in the field is caused by over-polishing.
