Got this today at the toll booth. It just looks weird. Can make out 198 but no exact year. Is the proper diameter of a normal dime. Has the full rim intact (all reeding is visible and not worn) but the OBV shows like excessive wear inside all-around the rim. but the rim is taller (face of coin to top of rim) than any other dime I've come across. If this a die-strike error what kind is it? Wrong planchet maybe? If it's wear it is definitely not uniform. Pics below
I have some thoughts, but I would love to see what others have to say. There might be a couple of things going on here.
I thought that too for the missing date and letters, but it doesn't explain the indention running from his temple to his jaw. Any thoughts on that?
Looking at the position of the indent it's looks to be directly in-line with the torch image on the reverse. Good thing I'm new at all this.
Wow! I don't even want to give an opinion as it probably wouldn't be a good one because to me, the "LIBERTY" just doesn't look right.
The vague incuse impression of the torch is a "greasy ghost". Die fill of just the right viscosity tends to flow toward the areas of lowest effective striking pressure, which in this case is the area opposite the torch. The result is an indentation in Roosevelt's head. Greasy ghosts are known in all denominations from cent to half dollar.
Great explanation Mike you really know a lot about these error coins. Did you work for the mint or something?
AS I SAID THERE IS NO NUMBER AFTER THE 198 AND THERE'S AN INDENTATION ON HIS JAWLINE AND ON THE BACK OF THE DIME THE LETTERS IN DIME ARE EXTREMELY FADED OUT. IS THIS WORTH ANYTHING TO ANYONE?
