First time posting to a coin forum. I have been collecting coins for several decades now and noticed some of my older mint proof coins were beginning to oxidize (sorry I don't know proper coin lingo) and have recently decided to send them off to get graded before they get worse. While going though my 1972-S proof set I noticed an oddity on the SBA and originally thought it was some type of filament within the casing. Seeing how I planned on sending this in for grading I decided to take it out of the casing and believe this coin has a crack. Trying to get community thoughts on this and if this is something unique or could take away from the coin itself. The crack is small irregular design which looks to be on SBA's collar and coin facing. I have attached pictures and these are the best I can take. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
It looks like a very small scratch to me. Just because it is a proof coin, and most of us expect that something like this couldn't possibly happen to a proof coin, it does occur from time to time. When I clicked on the anomaly to enlarge it, the left-most third looks like something may have skipped across the coin. It looks like it moved in a "herky-jerky" fashion.
There is also similar under her chin. Have you tried rinsing the coin with distilled water? There is often dust etc. inside those capsules
Thanks for pointing that out. I never noticed the one under chin. I looked at that one with a pocket 60x magnifier it looks raised and polished but that may be an optical illusion. I have never spent any time looking at a coin in this detail. I spend most of my time studying minerals. I may now go through all my coins and see if I have nay surprises I never caught before.
