1979 quarter, real error or pmd damage?

  1. Hello I found this quarter and it has a very noticeable mark on it.. which I am not sure if it is a pmd or a real error ... I want to say it is a true error mark...but then not sure..

    Not sure what caused that but it took a pretty hard hit. It's damaged.

    Hi, Leilani!

    When a planchet enters the coining chamber, it is surrounded on all three sides when it is struck. One side is the die that forms the obverse of the coin, one side is the die that forms the reverse of the coin and, finally, the retaining collar which forms the edge.

    If this coin was an actual Mint error, the retaining collar would have to have a dent in it that would cause the coin to look like this. That would be impossible because it would not allow the obverse and reverse dies to strike the planchet as they were intended.
