Could be press marks as mentioned before. Also reminds me of an Ebay article about fake coins - Coins on left are fakes. Coins on right are genuine. Fake coins are thinner and have striated edges which are slightly beveled. Genuine coins are thicker and have smooth edges. The striations on the edges can indicate a fake. This is also true of the Jefferson and Buffalo nickels fakes popping up. GSDykes
Striations on the edge from the shearing of the metal during blank punching can also sometimes be seen on genuine coins as well.
