Ok I know it's not a coin, but some of you out there know what this is and I need to have an idea of its value before I try to sell it. I have inquired to local coin shops with no luck. Here is a brief description of the Medal. It was minted to commemorate the implementation of the European Monetary System. Front shows EUROPA standing and the Roman numeral 3. P Rodier is the engraver as I learned from reading an earlier discussion in this forum. It was minted in France at the Monnaie De Paris, and is 1 of only 1500 minted in Gold at 50 grams. The back has images chosen to represent various countries in Europe belonging to this European Currency Unit, a total of 9. I have the certificate of guarantee and the Medal is still in its original sealed plastic package.
ok first it will help if you can post a picture of it, very difficult to identify with accuracy without a picture
photos of ECU Hello highlander, the photos are in the original posting. Doubt it is in Kraus because it is not a coin. also there was this topic a few months back on this web sight and it was not listed then.
With some exceptions, medals - even those produced at national mints - seldom carry much premium over their bullion value, even with low mintages. Rodier is not an engraver whose work I have seen hyped on EBay at substantial premiums, although I am the first to admit that I don't spend much time looking at exonumia auctions.
is Krause wrong? If your Krause is an older one then that might explain it. It appears that there may have been some confusion as to this being a medal or a coin. I guess even experts can make mistakes. This topic was discussed in detail on the following thread a few months back. Click on all the links within that thread and you will believe it is a Medal. http://cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=1692 I wish Krause did have it listed cause I still don't know what its worth. Meanwhile I watch the price of gold climbing. I may have to sell it for bullion value at 1.479 ounces of gold times $441. that is around $660 ruffly.
well looking through the book there is very similar, though these carry a euro value on them.infact the design is exactly the same but no value on it.
Digger, here is a link that will provide you with some information on the history of the ECU & its replacement by the Euro; http://fx.sauder.ubc.ca/ECU.html .I trust that you will find this to be of interest. If you have any comments to make, please email me at royalist0007@yahoo.co.uk .
I recently inherited 3 of these coins/medals. Are they reallly gold at the 1.479 oz? What would I do with them? They are in those 2x2" sealed holders and look to be brand new. I know nothing about these other than web searches that show their "melt" value.. thanks for any info you can provide!
