Hi, I have a 1797 English penny, it has a few dings in the edges, I am not sure what it is made of, maybe silver. the face and back are not worn too bad it's still very legible. Can any one tell me what this might be worth? John
Welcome to the forum John. Can you post a picture? If not, please describe the coin more fully, particularly it's diameter and weight. The problem with trying to identify yours based solely on "1797 English penny . . . maybe silver" is that there was a late 18th Century silver penny (KM#614), but it would be dated either 1795 or 1800. None were minted in 1797 according to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, 18th Century 3rd Ed. On the other hand, there are two varieties of a copper 1797 penny (KM#618) and (KM#618a). The second version is gilt, that is, gold colored. The sizes and values are dramatically different, and pictures would also be very helpful in assigning a condition grade.
