Found a 1978 quarter today with no mint mark (read that Philadelphia did not mark until 1980), not even a dot, but there is a large "6" imprinted on the coin right by Washington's face. I have found no answers as to what this is in my research thus far. Any thoughts??

Somebody punched it with a counterstamp

    That is perfectly normal.

As McB stated above, someone has counterstamped the coin. Who? Why? I don't know.

Punch sets are readily available to anyone who wants to buy one tristen. The "6" was not done at the mint, but by someone for whatever reason after it entered circulation.
