Hi, I just started coin roll hunting and tonight I came across a 1978 Nickel with the letter "P" pressed in above Monticello. I put it under my magnifying glass and found no scratches, so I'm inclined to think that this was pushed in rather than etched. Also, only the line width of the letter P is pressed in - the center surface area within the loop of the P is flush with the rest of the coin. This would seem difficult to do without a very precise press. I've attached a picture. Any thoughts?
It's not hard at all. If you hammered the end of a small piece of pipe or tubing into a (softer) metal blank, you could achieve the same effect. Chris
Is a counter-stamped coin an error from the original mint, or is it more likely that someone added the P afterwards?
