I have a 1978 nickel that looks as if it may have a few errors. Im no expert and just recently started doing a little coin hunting. The first picture is of the S in trust, does this look like an error or just normal wear? The second picture, (left is 1971, right is 1978) just for comparison, was wondering if what is circled is normal or if it is supposed to look like the other. I am not claiming this to be an error coin, just would like some input. TYIA.
First, welcome to the neighborhood @Lmack ! The "S" appears to be damage. The detail on the roof of Monticello of the '71 could be the result of a grease-filled die or die polishing. It's hard for me to tell from such a small image, but in any case, it wouldn't be worth a premium because it is so minor. Chris
On the first coin the S has taken a hit, Post Strike Damage. On the second coin you are seeing an over polished die plus a different design. The master hubs were changed at least once, possibly twice between 1971 and 1978 with slight changes in the design each time. (The 1971 is the one showing the overpolishing.)
