I got this a while back in a bulk purchase of raw Ikes still in their mint cellophane. This one had A LOT less hits on it than the rest. It kinda got me wondering what it might grade out as. Coin presents full luster in hand. Not "bright white" but it is "shiny" so to speak. What do you think it would grade? I'm not good a grading these yet, but do have a grade in mind. Just want to see how close everyone else opinion is to mine. Need better photos?? Just ask. Thanks...Mont
64. Most of what I've seen coming out of mint cellophane has been grading 63 lately (for me, anyway). Yours is slightly better, but the TPG's have been strict on them lately IMO.
I'm not sure that it's the photos, but the luster looks to be completely gone in which case my grade is AU. With better pics, I could maybe see an MS grade, but with the subdued luster, no way.
I'm in at 64 also. Maybe soak it in some acetone. It looks like it still has some cellophane haze on it. I have looked at it some more and like it better at MS63.
This date comes nice which will count against it a lot. The coin has mint set haze which won't help and sometimes cause a bodybag. If it were soaked in alcohol and the haze came off I believe it would easily grade MS-64 and only a lucky day MS-65. For most dates it would grade MS-65 all day long.
If this is the best they sent then they are keeping about the best 8 to 10% of the sets they're cutting.
Thanks folks! i was thinking MS 64, possibly a 65 myself. The reverse does have more luster than the obverse and I do believe I can improve the obverse with little time and effort. I value all opinions and can see how with this luster one could call it AU. However I rescued this one from its mint cello. So if it has been circulated, it got spent and kept in its OGP.
I'm not good at grading Ike's yet but I have been looking at several both in person and on the Ike group grading tool and PCGS photograde. Luster: can't tell from photo but you said full luster in hand. Try to get a better photo if you can for luster. Marks: I like what I am seeing. Fields look good. Jaw, cheek, and Forhead look good. Reverse looks good with few marks too. I don't see any wear either. Strike: Good, Earth looks good and so does Ike's hair. Eye appeal. This is where I had some issues with the coin. At the middle of the neck and bottom of the neck on the obverse you have lime green spots. Same is true with the green spot on the reverse with the top feather on the left wing. There are black marks on Ike's temple and forehead. Rim: no problem Originality: I don't see much here. Once again, in hand you said it had luster. Conclusion: I don't think I have enough coins experience grading but it is a definite MInt State grade.
There could be marks hidden in this photo. I've taken pictures of Ikes where hits, nicks and dings were "hidden" or washed out by the lighting. I always reshoot in cases like this because I don't want anything hidden. I want the picture to show everything that my own eyes see. Based on your pictures it will be either 64 or 65. I love 78-Ds because they are so well-struck and often times exhibit tremendous luster.
