1978 D cent, what's up with the D being almost sold and the lines?

    First the Mint Mark - I think what you meant by your title is SOLID not SOLD
    Could be a very minor Die Chip that filled in the mint mark

    Second the Lines - Looks to be a bit of Improper Alloy Mix.. also a very minor issue.
    This is known as a "woody or woodie"
