1978 cent error? what would cause this?

    IMG_20111221_233138-1.jpg Is ths an error and if not what might cause it? I tried to post a better pic of the "ripples" blacktop will cause that?

    Unfortunately, looks like it spent some time on a blacktop.

    Well, its certainly not an error. Just an ugly looking coin.

    I can think of nothing in the minting process which would cause the appearance that you are seeing which then indicates that some series of events external to the minting process caused it to appear this way.

    Understanding or speculating on what those events are can be an exercise in futility as it could have been any number of things of which none would increase the value of the coin beyond it issue price of 1 cent.

    Acid bath? Sandblasted? I don't know. But it is certainly PMD (post-Mint damage).
