I have a 1977 Washington quarter that seems to have the numeral 1 lightly engraved right after the date. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?
Sounds like you may have found a coin marked by another collector I know. I can't say this is true for certain - but it is highly possible. This other collector marks various denominations of coins with a punch and then places them back into circulation in the hope that he will hear of one being found some day. He sometimes marks them with a letter or a number. I'll have to ask him if perhaps he has marked quarters with the number 1. He is far from alone in doing this. Over the years there have been many coins marked by many different people for many different reasons.
