Is this common with Kennedy Half's?

For coins that likely circulated heavily or went through a slot machine in a casino yes it's pretty common.

The coin shows a lot of wear (for a Kennedy) and probably spent a lot of time going through one armed bandits in Vegas or other similar locations. The excessive use rolling down the channels in the machine has worn down the edge.

If the OP circulated among lots of women for 40 years, he'd probably look worn on the edges, too!

I've been circulated and re-circulated for 60+ years. I look and feel better then this 77.

They are called "dryer coins" - one of the ways this happens is [for smaller coins] they fall between the drums of an industrial dryer and roll away the miles...
