It appears that the FG was left off. I noticed a lot of my 1977’s had lite FGs, and I’m guessing it is because of die wear.

As close as I can tell though, there isn’t a hint of the initials. What I initially thought might be remnants of the main line of the “F”, is actually a scratch that extends from the tail feathers to the leg.

I tried to get photos from different light angles. What do the rest of you think? Is it an error coin?

Looks legit to me! Notice how the Stars above DOLLA look like they are almost gone? That's another indicator of extensive die abrading for whatever reasons.
The more popular 1972-D No FG, even in BU condition, just looks heavily worn on the stars like your coin.

    Nice Find!

Of course now, you gotta find more!

Thanks Peter. I did notice the stars, but didn't think of them in conjunction with the missing FG. Great information. You have me looking at the coin in a new light.

I guess I should have said thank you 19Lyds. All my emails come thru as Peter@cointalk and it was stuck in my head.

My guess is over polished die as other details are mushy. Cool find!
