Need help on this 1977 D kennedy half. I'm new at catching errors. Is th7s an error or just wear and tear. Thanks. Ill post front, back and error?
Stevo, It's difficult to tell from the photos provided exactly what you're seeing. There are two main DDO's that I'm aware of for the 1977D Kennedy. The first (DDO-001) has pretty strong doubling on TRUST that I don't see here. The second (DDO-002) is much more subtle, and in the 6 or so I have it's usually easiest to see in the upper part of the second T in TRUST. Look for splits in the ends of the points of letters (split serifs) or lines down the middle of letters. It will be difficult to capture in photographs. The easiest way to capture it is usually with repositioning of the lights. Otherwise, I see a generally mottled/hammered appearance of the metal on the coin - is that what you're referring to?
I would also ask...are you seeing and error or variety? I don’t see any doubling so you don’t have a variety. I don’t know about any errors. Attached are photos of TRUST for the CONECA listed 77D DDO-001 and the 77D DDO-002. Larry Nienaber
Gotcha, that helps a lot. Not sure on the hammered comment, do you mean that to be the coin is just worn that way or literally. lol. Also, dumb question, errors I have a grasp on, what do you mean by varieties? I noticed the difference in the sevens. Maybe I read something wrong. I thought that the seven on the left may have come from a faulty or breaking die to make the 7 bubble like that. I have learned from your comments. I"m going on the premace that no question is a dumb question. Hang with me. lool Thanks. @stldanceartist @cpm9ball @atrox001
An error would be something that alters the design of one or maybe a few coins, but not a large part of an entire production run. A variety would be something that has permanently altered the die. Chris
